I. Introduction:

A. I have been taught that Judas did not eat the Lord’s Supper because Christ kept the Lord’s Supper pure for his church.

B. Could Judas have eaten the Lord’s Supper and the Lord’s Supper still be pure?

1. Of course.

2. Can a person who is lost be "ducked" by the church and the church still retain Scriptural authority of baptism?

3. Of course.

4. Can a church accept for membership a person who is not scripturally baptized and still retain the authority to baptize?

5. Yes, as long as the church, in all honesty before Almighty God, believes they are obeying the commands of God and are ignorant of any wrongdoing.

II. There are four scriptures that speak of this point.

A. Matthew 26:20-30. At the close of this passage the disciples are out of the upper room, and Judas has left. The passage does not state whether Judas took the supper or not.

B. Mark 14:17-26.

C. Luke 22:14-39. This is the clearest expression that Judas was present when the Lord’s Supper was given.

1. See verses 19-20.

2. The only way we can remove Judas from the Lord’s Supper is to remove verse 19-20 from the chorological order given here and place it at a later time: with Matthew 26:26-29 and Mark 14:22-25.

3. Why would this be done?

D. John 13:2-18:1.

1. We know John 12:1 is six days before the Passover (or more properly, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is the 15th day of the first month).

2. All the events from John 12:12-50 happen on the 5th day before the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Verse 12 is the 5th day before the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It is Saturday, the weekly Sabbath of the Jews that Christ made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, not Sunday, as the proponents of the celebration of Easter, claim.

3. John 13:1 is an introduction to the events that follow.

4. John 13:2 explain that "…and supper being ended…" Which supper? There is no doubt in my mind that the Passover supper, in which the Lord’s Supper was instituted, is spoken of.

a. John 13:2 ties with Luke 22:20, "Likewise also the cup after supper…"

b. It seems to me that both the bread and the wine were used after the supper to institute what we now call, The Lord’s Supper.

5. Notice the sequence of events.

a. John 13:2 – After the supper, the devil has now put into the heart of Judas to betray Christ.

1) This does not mean that this is the time Judas decided to work out the arrangements to betray Christ.

2) According to Matthew 26:14-16, Mark 14:10,11 and Luke 22:3-6, all these arrangements had already been worked out.

3) John 13:2 means that Judas now determines he will follow through on his plans.

b. Judas is still present – he does not leave until verse 30.

c. John 13:3-17 – Christ washed the disciples feet – including Judas.

d. John 13:18 – Christ speaks of his betrayer.

e. John 13:19-30 – There is a discussion about the betrayer and Judas goes out to betray Christ.

f. John 13:31-17:26 – There is much teaching by Christ and the prayer of Christ to God as recorded in John 17.

g. John 18:1 – Jesus here goes into the Mount of Olives (or the Garden of Gethsemane) as recorded in Matthew 26:30, Mark 14:32, and Luke 22:39.

III. If Judas took the Lord’s Supper, does that fact destroy the Lord’s Supper, or does it confirm scripture?

A. I Corinthians 11:27-32 – These instructions for taking the Lord’s Supper seem to confirm that people can take the Lord’s Supper in error and still not hurt others that take the supper correctly.

B. Judas confirms this scripture as he committed suicide. The Lord’s Supper was not helpful to him, but condemned him.

C. Acts 5:1-11 – Ananias and Sapphira lied concerning what everybody had been honest about. They paid for their wickedness, but nobody else did. The integrity of giving was kept, and the wrongdoers pay.

D. I can see Christ giving Judas the Lord’s Supper, even though Christ knew Judas would betray him.

1. Jesus called Judas to follow him, even though Christ knew he would betray him.

2. Christ called Judas to be an apostle, even though Christ knew he would betray him.

3. John the Baptist baptized Judas (John was an apostle). The authority of John’s baptism was not compromised.

4. In Matthew 10, Christ sent Judas to all of Israel, giving him power to do miracles, heal the sick, cast out devils, etc; even though Christ knew he would betray him.
