DEUTERONOMY 3
I. Verse 1-12 - The capturing of Og, the King of Bashan.
A. When Og decided to fight Israel, God gave him into the hand of Israel.
1. Israel tool 60 walled cities and many unwalled cities.
2. These are the cities the tribe of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh would leave their wives, children, and flocks in while the warriors crossed Jordan to help the rest of Israel conquer the promised land.
3. With the destruction of Og, Israel destroys the last of the giants.
4. verse 11 - Og's bedstead was 13 1/2' long and 6' wide.
5. Forty years ago, Israel said they couldn't destroy the giants.
6. They were right, God had to destroy the giants for them.
B. Verse 13-17 - Moses distributed the land of Sihon and Og to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh.
II. Verse 18-20 - Moses commands the tribe of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh to fulfill their part of the bargain and leave their wives, children, and flocks on the west side of Jordan and the warriors to pass over Jordan with the rest of Israel in order to possess the promised land.
III. Verse 21-22 - Moses commands all of Israel to go into the promised land for God has given it all to them. Israel shouldn't fear, but do right.
IV. Verse 23-29 - Moses prayer to God.
A. Moses has seen the power of God again after 40 years of silence.
B. He is very excited about the things God has done and will do.
C. It is for this reason that Moses asks God to forgive him and allow him to enter into the promised land.
1. Moses doesn't ask for any selfish reason.
2. He simply wants to see the power of God displayed.
D. His prayer is refused.
1. Moses said God did not hear his prayer.
2. This doesn't mean that God couldn't hear, but that He wouldn't .
3. The word "hear" means the same thing as "favorably answer".
E. Moses is instructed to charge Joshua for he is the next leader.
1. The word "charge" means to proclaim to, as in preaching.
2. Moses is to encourage, and strengthen him.
