GENESIS CHAPTER 6

A HEAVENLY HOMECOMING

Noah's flood compared with the gathering of people into eternity.

I. Divine Verdict:

Gen. 6:13 - The end of all flesh is before me.

I Thess. 1:8 - In flaming fire, God will take vengeance.

II. Divine Plan. Gen. 6:14 - Make an ark of Gopher wood. God gives all the instructions for the ark as He gives all the instructions for salvation.

1. Phil. 2:12 - Work out our own salvation.

2. I Cor. 3:11 - Build on Jesus.

3. John 3:16 - God gave Jesus. Baptism, church membership, or good works will not save.

III. Divine warning

1. Gen. 6:17 - God will bring a flood upon the earth.

2. John 3:36 - Either believe in heart, or the wrath of God is upon you.

IV. Divine Invitation

1. Gen. 7:1 - Noah and family asked into the ark.

2. Acts 16:30, 31 - Philippian jailer and family could be saved. But many people give many excuses -- Luke 17:26-29.

V. Divine Security

1. Gen. 7:16 - The Lord shut him in.

VI. Divine carefulness

1. Gen. 8:1 - God remembered Noah.

2. God will remember all that belong to Him.

VII. Divine Commission

1. Gen. 8:16 - Go forth and fill the earth.

2. Eph. 2:6, 7 - We'll spend eternity learning about God.

3. Rev. 21:24-27 - Some of the glories of eternity.

Conclusion: But remember the souls that died and went to hell during the flood and remember the souls in the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:15).

Where will you be? Where will you spend eternity?

NOTES ON GENESIS CHAPTER 6

I. Verse 1, And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, -- Talking about a progressive degeneration.

A. Started in Gen. 4:17 - Cain's wife had to come from among the female descendents of Adam and Eve. She left the presence of God (place of worship) in order to follow Cain.

B. Enoch's wife came from the presence of God or he married his sister.

C. The two families (Cain and Seth) didn't live together, but down through the years probably did keep in contact with one another. Finally interfaith marriage was a way of life.

D. Note that Cain's line fashioned tools and music. If saved people today are any indication of saved people in that day, they showed a great interest in:

1. 4:17 - building without God.

2. 4:19 - polygamy

3. 4:29 - wealth without God.

4. 4:21 - music (pleasure) without God.

5. 4:22 - tools and art without God.

6. 4:21-24 - vengeance without God.

E. Joshua 24:2, 14 - The result of interfaith marriage is the "Seth line" worshipping other Gods. This is the reason for the flood.

Verse 2, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

II. Text: Gen. 6 -- Who are the "Sons of God"? Most commentaries say the sons of God are the fallen angels. I do not believe this is true. It seems to me they are saved people. If the individual people are not saved, they are definitely in the line of Christ.

The term "Sons of God" is used 4 times in the Old Testament.

A. Dan. 3:25 - Nebuchadnezzar saw a man.

1. "Son" of God - probably Jesus Christ.

2. Form (appearance of sight).

3. How did Nebuchadnezzar know the form of Jesus Christ?

4. "Form" of his idol was terrible - Dan. 2:31.

B. Job 1:6, 2:1 -- These are not angels. This scene does not take place in heaven, but on the earth.

1. Son of God always - Jesus Christ.

2. Sons of God are always saved people.

a. Begotten of God in salvation.

b. Adopted into the family.

c. Many scriptures show sons of God are saved.

d. No scripture show sons of God are angels.

3. Sons of God presenting (to place [anything so as to stay]) themselves in a special place of worship.

a. Job. 1:12, 2:7 - Satan going from presence of God.

b. Gen. 4:16 - Cain going from presence of God.

c. Jonah 1:3 - Jonah fleeing from presence of God.

d. All of the above fled from the special place of worship to God.

e. Gen. 4:26 - refers to Job 1:6, 2:1. Job probably lived before the flood and the place of worship was before the cherubims at the entrance to the Garden of Eden.

Special places of worship

1. Before cherubim at entrance to Garden of Eden.

2. Tabernacle built by Moses.

3. Temple built by Solomon.

4. Church built by Jesus Christ.

4. These sons of God were saved people before the flood who assembled themselves before God to worship Him. The devil is still at worship services.

Job 38:7 - Sons of God shouted for joy.

1. Job wasn't there. He wasn't born yet. God is showing Job that he is a fallible man and He is totally supreme. God does not have to give an answer to Job for His actions. God doesn't answer to anybody.

They're shouting for joy at the creation of God and His exceeding goodness - This is a worship service.

Job wasn't there when the morning stars sang together (those are actually stars - Ps. 119:1, 148:1-6) nor was he there when those before him worshipped God.

Job will be there when the sons of God shout for joy (this will take place when all the sons of God are gathered together). Job will be there, but he will be praising God for His wondrous power, and will not be questioning or asking why.

a. Job wasn't the end of things (though he thought he was).

b. Neither are we.

Note the context.

2. Chapter 4 is talking about generations of the "Cain line". This is referring to the Sons of men.

3. Chapter 5 is talking about the generations of the "Seth line". This is referring to the Sons of God.

The argument is that the Sons of God are angels who have intercourse with daughters of men and very wicked giants are conceived. (This is erroneous teaching.)

4. 6:2 - indicates they were married; necessitating angels would take up permanent residence on the earth. This did not happen.

5. Matt. 22:23-33 (v. 30) - the actual teaching is:

a. Marriage is for bearing children and replenishing the earth (Gen. 1:28).

b. In heaven (being in a spiritual body) there are no marriages for there is no need to have children.

c. The angels are in a state of being sexless. They cannot beget or bear children.

6. Some say the angels possessed the bodies of men.

a. Angels are not sexual (sensual) creatures. They are not fleshly, but spiritual -- created a little above humans.

b. Why would that cause the offspring to be giants and very wicked?

7. Gen. 6:4 - a very careful reading of the verse reveals that the giants came before interfaith marriages. (Polygamy)

8. Need to remember the error is spiritual, not just physical.

9. God is always just in His dealings and judgment. God would not punish men because angels had an illicit affair with women. God would not destroy all life on the earth (except for the 8 souls on the ark) for sins they did not commit and could do nothing about.

III. Fair --

A. Looking at their future wives like lost people do.

1. Gen. 4:19 - Adah means pleasure, beauty. Zillah means luxurious hair, good color. Gen. 4:22 Naamah means loveliness.

2. Taking whom they chose. This is not adultery, or fornication, but polygamy, the taking of more than one wife.

3. This is the first record of saved people having more than one wife.

4. Saved people are now following lost people. Genesis 4:19 Lamech a prime example.

B. There is no thought of God's will.

C. Marrying without parental consent -- Rom. 1:30.

Verse 3, And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

I. Shows a limit to the time God will deal with men.

II. The 120 years is not a limit on the time men will live. In Gen. 11:10-32, these people lived longer than 120 years (after the flood).

A. The 120 years is a limit on the time until the flood will come.

B. It must have been very well known among "Christians" of that time for look what was said about Noah. (Gen. 5:29)

C. This also helps us to understand Gen. 6:8. Noah did not find grace in the sight of God because of his good works, but rather he found grace in the sight of God before he was born.

Another reason we know this was a public statement was because Moses wrote it down. All of the things Moses wrote down was common knowledge. It was also inspired by God.

The scripture I use to determine that it took Noah 120 years to build the ark is Genesis 6:3, which states,　 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

Many believe the 120 years refers to the length of life of people back then, that God would cause men to not live longer than 120 years.　 This thought does not bear out in scripture, however.　 See the following chart for the age of men in those days:

It is pretty easy to see that Genesis 6:3 does not refer to the age of men.

　

Also, "just a little side thought" - compare Genesis 5:32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.　　　

　

Because we know it took Noah 120 years to build the ark, we also know when Noah got instructions from God to build the ark, he had no children.　 Not only did God give Noah three sons to help in building the ark, but we learn that Noah was the sort of spiritual man whose sons followed him when the rest of the world was living in wickedness.　 I know God put into the hearts of these three sons to desire righteousness, but God also uses "means" by using Noah as a good influence on his three sons and three daughters in law.　 In giving Noah these three sons,　the "seed" of the promised revival of the earth was also given.　 This is also proven by who got on the ark: Noah, his wife, and their three sons, and the wives of the three sons.　 God gave these three sons, three wives out of a wicked world.　 This is a great thought to me, as God can also give my children and grandchildren faithful husbands and wives out of this wicked world.　 Also, growing a church by God giving children is a promise of God that his Word will continue after we are gone.

　

Verse 4, There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

I. The giants and the mighty men are two different groups of people.

A. Giants comes from the Hebrew word "nephilim". Mighty comes from the Hebrew word "Gibbor".

B. The giants come from the "genes" of men, as shown by looking at giants after the flood. If the giants came from the intercourse between angels and women, then we have this same intercourse occurring after the flood, but without God judging those people. This is certainly injustice and not a trait of God.

1. II Sam. 21:22 - four giants mentioned 21:16 - Ishbibenob, 21:18 - Sibbechai, 21:19 - Brother of Goliath (I Chron. 20:5 - Lahmi), 21:21 - 6 fingers and 6 toes giant. Probably from Rephaim lived in Ashteroth-Karnaim (East of Sea of Galilee).

2. Gen. 14:5 - Chedorlaomer defeating the Rephaims.

3. Gen. 15:20 - their land promised to Abraham and his descendants.

4. Zamzummin - Deut. 2:20 - giants called Zamzummin by Ammonites.

5. Zuzim - Gen. 14:5 - giants dwelling in Ham. (lived in Northern Africa)

6. Emim (means the Terrible){See Young's for more detail}

a. Gen. 14:5 - shows where they lived.

b. Deut. 2:10 - shows where they lived.

c. Deut. 2:11 - Moabites called the Anakims (giants) Emims

7. Anakim {See Young's for more detail}

a. Deut. 1:28 - Anakims dwelt in promised land.

b. Deut. 2:10 - the Emims were as tall as the Anakim.

c. Deut. 2:11 - Anakim called giants.

d. Deut. 9:2 - Joshua telling to destroy Anakims.

e. Joshua 11:21 - Joshua destroying the Anakims.

f. Joshua 11:22 - Anakims left only in Gaza, Gath, Ashdod.

g. Joshua 14:12, 13 - Caleb destroying Anakims.

II. The mighty men, according to Gen. 4:4 is the result of interfaith marriage.

A. God's plan is for the wicked and the righteous to be separate. II Cor. 6:14-18.

B. The sin is in the mixing of the saved and lost. In God's eyes, this is a very grievous sin.

C. Note the phase "and also after that"

Verse 5, And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

I. Wickedness of man was great in the earth.

A. 120 years before the flood or 1536 years after creation.

1. Lamech still alive - died 1651 after creation.

2. Methuselah still alive - died 1656 after creation.

3. Noah alive - of course - died 2006 after creation.

4. Put all wives and children and at the extreme, they'll be no more than 100 people. This is 120 years before the flood.

5. Methuselah died in 1656, the year of the flood -- but probably didn't die in the flood.

6. Lamech died 1651 - 5 years before the flood.

7. Only 8 people got on the ark - Gen. 6:18.

8. Luke 17:26-29 - There were very few saved in the days of Noah or the days of Lot.

9. Gen. 18:23-33 - (v. 32) - God told Abraham he wouldn't destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if there was 10 righteous. There wasn't.

10. Joshua 24:2, 14 - The result of interfaith marriage is the "Seth line" worshipping other Gods. This is the reason for the flood.

B. Man will be destroyed because of their wickedness, not the wickedness of angels and women.

C. The hero's are wicked men, men of renown (v. 4).

1. Today's hero's are rock stars and movie stars and old time gangsters.

a. Jesse James, Bonnie and Clyde.

b. movie - the Godfather. The hero makes the person in authority look like an idoit.

c. Burt Reynolds playing the "Bandit".

d. Fonzee making fun of Sheriff.

e. Duke boys in Hazard County are good guys and sheriff is evil.

f. "Gunsmoke" - "Kitty" - a whore - is portrayed as a heroine.

2. Our hero's were Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Whip Wilson, The Lone Ranger -- All were out to destroy evil and put criminals in jail.

II. The thought of his heart.

A. Mark 7:15 - the thing that comes out of a man defiles him.

1. Luke 11:39 - Make sure the inside is right.

2. Matt. 15:18, 19 - Those things that come out of the heart defile a man.

Verse 6, And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

I. God repenting (Has a change of mind - not being sorry or regretting actions).

A. Example:

1. I Sam. 15:35 - about Saul being king.

2. Ps. 106:45 - God repenting because of His mercies.

3. Amos 7:3 - Stopped grasshoppers from eating.

4. Jonah 3:10 - changed toward Ninevah.

5. II Kings 20:1-7 - revealing secret will to Hezekiah.

B. God knew all the time what would happen. Dealing with the permissive will of God.

C. When God repented, He set out to destroy sin -- so should we. Luke 19:8-9 - When Zacchaeus repented (was saved) he wanted to make things right.

II. Grieved at heart. God was pleased when things went "right", grieved when things went "wrong".

Verse 7, And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

I. Why would God destroy the beast, creeping things and fowl of the air when they could not help what the evil men had done, and had done nothing wrong themselves?

A. Ex. 23:27-33 - (v.29) - God said, (speaking in a strictly physical sense) it would be easier for Israel to defeat men than to destroy the overpopulation of animals.

B. It would not be right just to kill the animals in order to get rid of them.

C. Gen. 15:16 - When the iniquity of the Amorites was full, the people of Israel desired to come out of Egypt and serve God. So the destruction of the Amorites was God judging them.

II. Didn't say anything about destroying fish.

A. Wouldn't drown except for mud and very swift waters.

B. Fish didn't hinder Israel from inhabiting the earth.
