Time
James 4:14 – "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Time passes quickly – James 4:14 – life is like a vapor.
Things hurt us that we do not expect to hurt us – Billy Joe telling me it didn’t hurt him to watch horror movies – it did me. It did him too, according to his brother, Jimmy.
10 years passes quickly – compare Sarah and Katie, then compare Katie to Becky. In ten years, I probably won’t be your pastor. In ten years some of the people here will probably have passed on. In ten years, Jesus Christ might have come back. Where will you be in ten years?
We can spend our time doing all sorts of things:
Working. So busy the family believes work is more important than they are.
Playing. Busy with watching sports, playing Play Station games, computer stuff.
I. Scriptures to show the short time man has upon this earth.
A. Proverbs 27:1, Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
B. David's prayer to God before Israel shortly before he died. 1 Chronicles 29:15, For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
C. Job 7:6, My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.
D. Psalms 39:4-6 - LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am. {5} Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. {6} Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches and knoweth not who shall gather them.
E. Psalms 90:12 - So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. (entire chapter, especially verses 1-12)
F. Psalms 102:3, For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth. (Because of the present trouble that has come upon David.)
G. Psalms 102:11, My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass. (Because of the present trouble that has come upon David.)
H. Psalms 103:15-18 - As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. {16} for the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. {17} But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children's children, {18} To such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them (Mankind should praise and bless God because He has blessed us, who are nothing but vanity and that which quickly fades away.)
Genesis 6:3 – God limited man’s years to 120. "And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years."
Psalms 90:10 – "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away."
Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:7 – Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come when you will say you have no pleasure in them.
Revelation 12:14 – Israel is protected for 3 ½ years "And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent."
Revelation 10:6 – "And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:"
